First, always ensure that there are no air leaks in the engine. To do this, use a high-temperature gasket or silicon sealants which can be bought in almost all RC hobby stores. The right measurements

Grabbing a graph paper helps one in the measurements so that he/she does the right thing from the beginning.

It is greatly discouraged doing it on a whim. The right procedure is to measure out the space one is going to build the track. Measurements are done using a measurement tape then transfer that to the graph paper. If one only has 16 feet by 16 feet space to work on, then make sure each foot on the graph paper is properly measured so as not to over/under size the track. When it comes to the design there is no real set rule on how the track is supposed to look. Just remember that it is your track and therefore should look the way you want it to look. You can make turns wherever you feel like, the idea here is to be creative and have fun.

Keep in mind that you should leave enough room for the rc trucks to turn corners etc.  When planning to race a couple of rc trucks on the track, you need to have a space of at least 4 to 7 feet from wall to wall.
